3 out of 5 stars Terrible battery life and vol control   September 5, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I am a Sony fan but I am not very pleased with this radio. The battery life is appauling, rendering it unportable. I took it away when I first had it for the weekend and couldn't use it on the second day as the batteries had run out. That shows how much power it must be using. The sound quality is very good, although the volume on BBC World Radio is much louder than on Radio 4, so I have so adjust the volume each time I switch stations which is annoying. The awful volume and tuner knobs on the side render this volume problem even more of a nuisance, as they are diffcult to turn if you don't hold the radio with the other hand at the same time. Adjusting it at the side of the bed is therefore difficult. Unusually for Sony the design is faulty. I like the sleep timer as a feature but I do wish there were more presets. I can't fault the sound quality and this lives up to the Sony quality. It is nicely made with good quality casing and easy on/off button on the top.If you want to use it on mains all the time and don't have to change the volume frequently then it's a great radio.

1 out of 5 stars Sony XDRS50   August 30, 2008

I brought a Sony XDRS50 about 6 months ago
It does not go loud enough for normal use,
It only lasts about 2 hours on a new set of duracells so as a portable raido it is useless.
The sound is very tinny!!! My advise [do not buy one]

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment   May 12, 2008

I bought this to replace an old Sony transistor radio that I used to carry around the house in the morning before going to work. I would have done better to replace it with an updated analogue version, because the sound quality on the new digital Sony DAB isn't appreciably better and the volume is barely adequate. There are quite a few further drawbacks -
- it consumes batteries voraciously
- I found I needed to extend the aerial fully to ensure a continuous signal (even in Central London), which is awkward on a portable
- it's much more expensive than the old technology
- there are some other hassles to do with changing the batteries quickly/not using mains supply with the batteries in.
Overall, I'm not sure why Sony bothered to launch this product. It's not convenient enough to work as a truly portable radio.

4 out of 5 stars better than I expected   April 20, 2008

This is a neat little machine with a good tone. Small and light with a tiny mains supply. It works fine with no aerial.
I also bought Duracell 2650 mAhr NiMH batteries - which lasted at least 12 hrs before recharging. (I left it on overnight and it was still playing in the morning)
It's a pity the batteries do not charge when you plug it into the mains supply.

3 out of 5 stars Getting sonyfied   April 4, 2008

In our house we seem to be changing lately from Panasonic to Sony. New LCD HD TV - Sony - great. About 9 months ago got a sony non-digital VCR as our Panasonic had died, and the two go together, even though one is non-digital, we can still record our videos and its great, picture is fine. Only Panasonic survivor is my little cd/radio but the hi fi is sony and now the new sony Dab XDRS50, which to a person unused to the new DAB technology, is a bit of a disappointment, it sounds like it is being played in a bathroom, or is it me ? Is the clarity so much that it SHOULD sound like that ? I don`t know, I just know if I had to choose between listening to my sony hi fi or the DAB I would chose my SONY HI FI and I am glad I saw all the info about it eating up the batteries, as I have always played on mains. Sorry Sony if thats new tech, then I`ll stick with the old.
