4 out of 5 stars Why is this product so low priced?   January 1, 2009

Sony is well known for its mass market appeal as well as its high quality tv screens. Less good generally are some of its hifi seperates. However this little blu-ray player is a wow.I have researched the current market and viewed the majority of players currently available . Most of them do not compete with the quality of this frankly budget priced item. Other reviewers have extolled its virtues. They are right! It is a finished product that really performs well. DVD upscaling is superb. I compared the blu ray edition with the dvd edition of Rush - Snakes and Arrows Live. There is no real difference at all. The sound quality is up there with the better dvd players although it does sound better when used with a 2.1 or 5.1 theatre system than just with the tv.Would recommend this player.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome Machine   December 25, 2008

I wanted a Blu Ray player what did the lot, and after careful dleberation and review reading opted for this model. And ordered one for a christmas present to me. This has got to be the best on the market, from opening the box to getting it set up on my tv and surround system took me about 10 mins at the most. the picture jumps out at you it's that clear and the sound is awsome as well, upscales my DVD's no problem and gives them a better viewing quality. I got the 3 Blu Ray film pack as well for free, and in the box is a cd and if you register the player with Sony using the cd and filling in a questionaire online, they send you Casino Royale + Batman Dark Knight. What more could you ask for. Have got a network cable attached and can download bd live content onto supplied 1gb memory card.

5 out of 5 stars Great machine, lousy packing.   December 24, 2008

I was a bit worried when it arrived as the Amazon box was deformed and crushed. Opened it up to find that the Sony box was floating about in a box that was several inches bigger than it was with a bit of brown paper.

That said, the Sony box appeared to have survived without damage. I was a bit worried also when I noticed that the Sony box had been opened and resealed with another layer of tape over the original. Frequently a sign of a returned item. There were signs that the cables had also been taken out of their wrapping.

You can Imagine that I examined the Player very carefully but could find no marks or other signs of abuse.

I connected it up, with a certain amount of trepidation, switched it on and found that it worked perfectly on all counts. I have the 350 model so knew, more or less, what to expect.

I have given it five stars as the unit is worth it in all departments, sound, picture and all other functions.

I only wish Amazon would be a bit more careful with the packing and save me being worried for nothing.

The price, at the moment, seems fantastic.

Ged.

5 out of 5 stars If you want Blu-ray....buy one of these!   December 24, 2008

Brought my BDSP550 about two weeks ago (175 warehouse deal on Amazon) and....wow great little player!

I went for this model because it de-codes the new audio formats on-board and I can then use the six channel analogue outputs into my old Marantz SR5300 AV Amp, which saved me having to shell out un-necessary cash on a new Amp.

Set-up took me about an hour.....HDMI into the Plasma, five RCA cables (I have a 5.1 audio system) to the amp, RCA Cable straight from the Sony into the Sub-woofer, then fiddling with the Amp (just set the input to six channel direct). I adjusted all the channels to be equal on the amp and used the Sony player to set the audio output levels and distances to the speakers. I also turned up the sub a notch as I have read other users complaining about a lack of base.

Picture quality is first class....even at 1080i (which is the best my panel can accept other than 720p). I did have to turn the colour setting down on the panel as it seems too 'in your face' otherwise.

Dvd playback is also excellent with pretty decent up-scaling of your old discs.

If you are still un-decided about Blu-ray......this is an affordable way to get into it (and still play your older DVD's as well).

For now I will selectivly buy Blu-ray discs that I think benefit from the new formats extra detail levels......just waiting for 'saving private Ryan' to appear...otherwise I'll continue with DVD (until the prices eventually drop to more affordable levels)

Oh.....and I got the two free discs from Sony as well (just register your product on-line using the included CD and wait about two weeks for the postman to bring them!)

All round then.....highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing quality player   December 20, 2008

This is my first Blu-Ray player but after looking at the few players available at present the Sony players are definitely better looking and are priced reasonably. I decided to get the BDP-S550 over the 350 as it has better audio connectivity for 7.1, has a 1GB memory card for BD-Live storage and has a backlit remote control.

It only takes 5-10 mins to setup but as soon as you pop in a Blu-Ray disc you will be blown away with the picture quality of this player. Discs take about 6 seconds to startup. If using a HDMI connection the player will upscale your old DVDs upto 1080p. The player is region 2 for DVDs but using a small hack using a One4All remote can easily be converted to play Region 1 DVDs but this cannot be done for Blu-Rays at present.

If you are thinking of purchasing a Blu-Ray player I guarantee that you won't be disappointed, highly recommended.
